Rebels def Heat 4-2

In spite of a penalty filled game, the Rebels were the victors on the weekend, winning 4-2 scoring all their goals short-handed.

Michael Haynes opened the scoring within the first 5 minutes of the of period one, followed within a minute by Tim Newmark slotting the second goal giving the Rebels their early lead. In the final minutes of the first period Tyler Kubara scored the first goal for Heat closing the period on a Rebels lead 2-1.

Sydney Heat’s captain Toby Kubara shared, “Heat are starting to come together nicely in our second game of the season making some good connections out on the ice and slowly working out our team chemistry with a couple of nice goals and lots of energy and positive attitudes throughout the game on the ice and on the bench”.

In the opening seconds of period two Mackenzie Bolger scored for the Heat levelling the score 2-2 which is where the game sat right through to the final 90 seconds of the third period.

Fighting a penalty kill, Michael Haynes puts the Rebels in the lead in the final minute with a greasy goal. Securing the win on an empty net, Lachlan Shumak scored in the closing seconds with another shorthanded goal.

Reflecting on the game overall, Kubara stated, “Tonight’s game was a hard fought contest. (Heat) Have to work on our positional play from face offs and pp/pk lines and constantly shifting line mates but that will come together with time. Rebels played well. A few good, odd man rushes and defensive shutdowns. Solid goal keeping from Rhett Kelly who stood in for absent goalies. It was a good, tight, enjoyable game till the very end.”
