Sting def Rebels 6-3

Sting def Rebels 6-3

Marty Kolos

PENRITH -- Tonight’s game between Sting and Rebels precisely lived up to the expectations that were placed on the second meeting between these two teams for 2014. In the end, however, it would be Sting who would add an extra two competition points to their total of 13, winning 6-3.

In the first period the Sting sprang out of the starting gates with great speed, and had an excellent first chance on goal. But from that immediate point on, it was Rebels who would take control of proceedings. The Rebels out-shot Sting during the opening term by a ratio of two-to-one (14-7), and had a number of quality scoring chances, which fill-in goal tender Luke Read was up to the task of. But with just under three minutes remaining in the first period, Yucca Reinecke would be rewarded with a solo effort to give his team the lead for what would eventually be the only occasion in the match.

The second period saw the Rebels being called for a total of 28 minutes in penalties, and Sting took advantage of the situation and scored one power play goal for a total of three on the period. The first goal by Silvan Maeder came on the back of some very neat passing on the PP, with assists going to Jaro Murgas and Marty Kolos, and the score was tied at 1-1. Kolos would then add an extra goal off a dump into the zone through heavy traffic, which the Rebels tender, Rhett Kelly, was simply unaware of. Assistance credit went to Maeder and Matt Cernec, who tallied his first ever ECSL career point during his second game for Sting. Rebels would then tie the score at 2-2, through a smooth play by Casey Kubara, with assistance from his captain, Alex Witts. However, while on the PP again, Sting were maintaining control of the play in the offensive end; and four seconds after the penalty expired, Lucien Hackett would find himself in front of an empty net with a gimme, and Paul Smith would get credit for the second-last touch.

During the third period, the Rebels’ penalty troubles continued, which left their Coaching staff in a state of utter confusion and frustration. The main complaint was a lack of penalties being called the other way; and their angst may have been justified, because Sting would eventually complete the game without a single penalty being called against them all night. Despite this, the Rebels would be the team to strike first through Chris Johnson and Jimmy Dufour. Johnson is having an impressive campaign so far in this, his rookie ECSL season. With the score tied at 3-3, it was clear that the game would go down to the wire. Once again, Sting would go on the PP, and just one second after then penalty clocked had reached zero, Scott Connelly would give his the team the go-ahead goal, with help coming from Moey Elsleiman. From this point on, the Sting’s spirits were renewed and they would go on to add another two goals in the dying minutes of the game, just for insurance. The first was scored by Smith, unassisted on a turnover; and the second by Murgas, with support from Connelly and Lukas Manco.

Sting would like to thank Luke Read for his assistance in net tonight. He played a solid game against his former club who he helped to win the 2011 ECSL championship, and it was clear he enjoyed himself. Woz’s Worker’s hat was awarded to Marty Kolos, in recognition of his two points and his consistency on the blue line tonight.

Next weekend, Sting play the Bombers who are carrying a lot of confidence after their very narrow defeat to Heat last night. For a brand new team, the Bombers are starting to come together nicely, and will continue to improve. The game on Sunday at Sydney Ice Arena, Baulkham Hills, starts at 5.45pm.
