Raptors def Sting 7-3

Raptors def Sting 7-3

Marty Kolos

Sting and Raptors met for the third time in 2014, and as per their previous encounter, the game was won by the Raptors. The final score was 7-3, which was also very similar to the result from 11th May, when Raptors defeated Sting 7-2.

Once again, Raptors goalie Dale Burgess was the star for his team. He was impenetrable at almost every turn, and remained focussed throughout the barrage of scoring chances that Sting created, especially in the third period. The Raptors were also playing a more physical game on this occasion, which allowed them to gain a psychological edge. However, the key differentiator in the game was possession; Sting allowed 5 turnovers, which led to breakaways - and the Raptors were able to capitalise on every chance through some very smooth finishing.

The first goal of the game was scored by Jayden Ryan at the eleven minute mark, which was shortly followed by an equaliser from Scott Connelly. Riley Bryn added another goal for the Raptors, one minute before the end of the first period.

During the second period, the Raptors’ offence really came to life, as they scored four goals to the Sting’s one. Raptors’ scoring in the second was provided by former Sting captain Laurie Mock, Mark Maladay, a second by Riley Bryn and a second by Jayden Ryan. The Sting’s lone marker came from Jaroslav Murgas.

The third period was a more controlled effort by the Sting, who dominated play, but could not find the back of the net in any fair fashion. Their single goal came from an awkward deflection, which Burgess wasn’t able reach in time - Jarkko Jarvinen would get the credit. Raptors’ veteran and alternate captain, Brenton Tripp, added one more goal with two minutes remaining in the game, when he found himself as the benefactor of another turnover by Sting. He finished the effort with a flashy backhand shot, beating Sting tender Cisco Sevilla on the blocker side.

Sting have a bye next weekend, which gives them two weeks to reassess their situation, and work on the aspects of their game which will hopefully return them to winning form. On Sunday 6th July Sting will host the Newcastle Northstars at the Sydney Ice Arena in Baulkham Hills at 7pm.
